How to record vocals in an untreated room

You do not need foam panels to get a usable vocal in a bedroom. The biggest wins are free: record close to the mic (about 4–8 in), point a cardioid mic so its back faces your most reflective wall, and put something soft directly behind the mic to catch the reflections coming back at it. Stand off the exact center of the room and out of corners. Do that and most of the boxy, echoey room sound is gone before you touch a plugin. It is very fixable at the source.
Most home vocals sound roomy for one reason: the mic is hearing the voice and the room at the same time. In a small untreated bedroom, sound leaves your mouth, bounces off bare walls, the ceiling, and the floor, and arrives back at the mic a few milliseconds later. That smear of reflections is what makes a home take sound hollow, distant, or like it was sung in a hallway.
The fix is to capture more direct voice and less room. You can push that ratio a long way with placement and a few cheap soft materials, no acoustic panels required. Here is how to set up a normal room so the vocal comes out clean enough to mix.
First, hear your room
Before you move anything, find out how reflective the space actually is. Stand where you plan to sing and clap once, sharply.
- If you hear a short buzzy ring or a fast fluttering after the clap, that is flutter echo bouncing between parallel bare walls. That ring will get into your vocal.
- If the clap just dies quickly with no tail, the spot is already fairly dead and you are in good shape.
Walk around and clap in a few spots. Rooms are not uniform, and the difference between the middle of the floor and a spot next to a bed full of soft bedding can be large. You are listening for the deadest-sounding position that you can comfortably sing in.
Where to stand
Placement is the free part of the fix, so get it right first.
Avoid the dead center of the room
The exact middle is where low-frequency room modes and reflections from opposite walls tend to sum up worst. Move off-center.
Stay out of corners
Corners build up low-end boom and make a small room sound boxier. Keep some distance from where two walls meet.
Face into softness, not a bare wall
Aim yourself so the mic is pointed toward a bookshelf, a bed, hanging clothes, or a blanket rather than a flat, empty, painted wall.
Every reflective surface you can take out of the equation before recording is one you never have to fight in the mix. A better mic in a bad spot still records the bad spot.
Use the mic’s own directionality
Almost every home vocal mic is a cardioid, which means it is most sensitive to whatever is in front of it and rejects sound arriving from behind. That rejection is a tool. Point the front of the mic at your mouth and let the back of the mic face your most reflective surface, so the wall you cannot treat is the one the mic is already ignoring.
If your worst surface is a bare hardwood floor, tilt the mic down slightly so the rear null points more toward the floor. If a window or a flat wall is the problem, angle yourself so that surface sits behind the mic. You are not changing tone here, just steering the mic away from the room.
Get closer, within reason
The single most effective move is distance. The closer you are to the mic, the louder the direct voice is compared to the reflected room, so the take sounds tighter and drier. For an untreated room, start around 4–8 in from the mic, which is a little closer than the usual 6–10 in pop-filter distance. Getting close boosts low frequencies through the proximity effect, so a close vocal can turn boomy or thick. That is a known, easy-to-fix tone issue, not a room problem. Always use a pop filter a few inches in front of the mic when you record this close, or plosive bursts from p and b sounds will thump the recording.
Cheap DIY absorption that actually helps
You do not need to treat the whole room. For vocals, the highest-value spot to deaden is directly behind the mic, because that is where the voice heads straight past the capsule, hits the wall, and bounces back into it. Kill that one reflection and the take gets noticeably cleaner.
- Moving blankets or thick duvets. Hang one on the wall behind the mic, and one on the wall you are facing if it is bare. Leave a small air gap behind the blanket rather than pressing it flat, which improves how much it absorbs. Command strips or a couple of nails are enough.
- A closet. A wardrobe full of hanging clothes is one of the best free vocal booths there is. Stand in the doorway facing in, with the clothes behind the mic soaking up reflections, and the open room behind you so it does not sound unnaturally boxed-in.
- A mattress or thick duvet. Stand one on its end behind the mic. It is bulky but absorbs across a wide range.
- A rug and soft furniture. A thick rug kills the floor-to-ceiling bounce, and a bed, sofa, or curtains all add absorption for free.
Aim to cover a decent share of the nearby hard surfaces, not the entire room. A handful of blankets around the recording position does most of the work. Bare parallel walls facing each other are the priority, since they are what caused the flutter echo in your clap test.
Thin foam tiles and clip-on mic reflection shields help a little with high-frequency zing, but they are weak on the low-mid boxiness that makes small rooms sound bad, and a shield sits so close to the mic it can add its own coloration. Soft mass like blankets and clothes, placed behind the mic, does more for less money. Buy panels later if you want; you do not need them to start.

Record a mono track
A single vocal mic is mono. Arm one mono track set to your mic’s input so you are not recording a hollow, half-empty stereo file. If you are new to this, start with how to record vocals in REAPER.
Set a safe level
Sing your loudest part and aim for peaks around -12 to -6 dBFS. That leaves headroom so nothing clips, which no plugin can undo later.
Add a light high-pass, not heavy processing
A gentle ReaEQ high-pass around 70–90 Hz on the way in tames rumble and some proximity boom without thinning the voice. Keep it subtle. The goal at capture is a clean, dry take, not a finished mix.

What this will not do
Setting up the room well gets you a clean starting point. It does not do everything.
- It will not remove room sound that is already baked into an old take. Reflections captured with the voice cannot be fully separated afterward. - It will not make a small bedroom sound like a large studio. The goal is dry and clean, not big and expensive.

- It will not replace tuning, timing, or performance. A clean room captures a good take faithfully; it cannot rescue a shaky one.
An untreated bedroom can record a clean vocal if you capture more voice and less room. Clap-test for the deadest spot, stand off-center and out of corners, point the cardioid mic’s back at your worst wall, get within 4–8 in with a pop filter, and hang a blanket or use a closet behind the mic.
