How close should you be to the mic when recording vocals at home

For most home vocals on a cardioid mic, start about 6–10 in away, roughly a fist to an open hand-span, with a pop filter a few inches in front. Closer than that and the proximity effect makes the voice boomy and thick; farther and it gets thinner and picks up more of the room. There is no single correct number: it depends on your mic, your voice, and how loud you sing, so treat distance as a tone control and adjust it by ear. It is very much within your control at the recording stage.
“How close should I be to the mic?” is one of the first questions every home recordist asks, and the honest answer is that distance is not a fixed setting you dial in once. It is one of the strongest tone controls you have, and it works before any plugin touches the signal. Sit too close and the voice turns heavy and boomy. Sit too far and it goes thin and starts to sound like the room. The good starting range for most people is about 6–10 in, but the right distance for your take is the one that sounds best on your mic and voice.

Why distance changes the tone
The reason getting closer adds bass is the proximity effect. On a directional microphone, moving closer to the sound source lifts the low frequencies, and the closer you get, the bigger the lift. Move away and that bass boost falls off, so the voice sounds thinner. This is well documented physics, not a quirk of cheap gear.
Two details matter for home recording:
- It only happens on directional mics. Cardioid, super-cardioid, and figure-of-eight mics all show proximity effect, and almost every home vocal mic is a cardioid. A true omnidirectional mic has essentially none, which is one reason omni lavaliers sound consistent at any distance.
- It is strongest straight on. The effect is largest when you sing directly into the front of the mic (on-axis) and it eases off as you move to the side of it. That gives you a second lever: angle, not just distance.
Because distance controls the low end, you can use it deliberately. A thin, bright voice can move in to about 4–6 in to gain warmth. A deep or booming voice can back off to 8–12 in to stay clear. You are shaping tone at the source, which always sounds more natural than trying to add or subtract it later with EQ.
A starting distance for a home setup
Ranges below are starting points to adjust by ear, not universal presets.
Most sung and spoken vocals
Start around 6–10 in from the mic. That is close enough to stay above the room but far enough that the proximity effect is warm rather than boomy.
Loud or bass-heavy voices
If you sing loud or have a deep voice, move out toward 8–12 in. This keeps the low end under control and stops the mic from being overloaded on your loudest notes.
Quiet, soft, or thin voices
If your voice is light or you record quietly, move in toward 4–6 in for more body and a better ratio of voice to background noise. Watch for boominess and plosives as you get closer.
Put a pop filter a few inches in front of the mic whenever you record this close. It blocks the plosive bursts from p and b sounds, and it doubles as a handy spacer so you keep a consistent distance instead of drifting toward the mic as you get into the take.
Find your own distance in two minutes
Do not guess. Let your ears pick the spot.
Record the same line three times
Sing or speak the same phrase at roughly 4 in, 8 in, and 12 in. Keep everything else the same. A ruler or your hand span makes the distances repeatable.
Level-match, then compare
Closer takes record louder, and louder always sounds “better” at first. Nudge the clips to a similar level before you judge, then listen for tone: which one is warm without being boomy, clear without being thin?
Pick the spot, then mark it
Once one distance wins, note where the pop filter sat and keep it there for the whole session. Consistency between takes matters more than chasing the perfect inch.
Do not compare distances by loudness. A close take is louder simply because it is nearer, and that head start fools almost everyone. Match the levels first, then decide, or you will always “prefer” the closest one for the wrong reason.
Using angle to tame plosives
If a good distance still gives you popped p sounds, change the angle before you change the distance. Speaking or singing slightly across the mic instead of straight into it, or aiming the mic a little above your mouth and pointing it down, lets the blast of air from plosives pass by the capsule instead of hitting it head-on. Backing off a little also weakens the air blast by the time it reaches the mic. A pop filter handles the rest. This is the standard fix, and it costs nothing.

Record a mono track

Set a safe level
Sing your loudest part and aim for peaks around -12 to -6 dBFS. That leaves headroom so nothing clips, which no plugin can undo later.
Add a light high-pass if you recorded close
A gentle ReaEQ high-pass around 70–90 Hz trims rumble and some proximity boom without thinning the voice. Keep it subtle; the goal at capture is a clean, dry take.
What the right distance will not fix
Getting distance right gives you a better raw take. It does not solve everything.
- It will not fix a bad room. If the space is echoey, moving closer helps the ratio of voice to room, but the reflections are still there. Treat the recording spot too: see how to record vocals in an untreated room.

- It will not rescue a recording that is too quiet or noisy. Distance affects the voice-to-noise ratio, but a hissy take needs cleanup, not just repositioning.
- It will not fix pitch, timing, or performance. A well-placed mic captures a good take faithfully; it cannot make a shaky one good.
