Stock REAPER has no dedicated de-reverb tool, so you cannot separate the two cleanly. You can reduce how much the room jumps out, especially in the pauses, and you can make the overall take sound tighter and closer. That is usually enough to rescue a mildly echoey recording. It is not enough to fake a treated studio.

Why reverb is so hard to remove

A dry vocal is just the direct sound from your mouth to the mic. In an untreated room, the mic also picks up dozens of delayed copies of that sound reflecting off walls, the ceiling, and the desk. Those reflections arrive at slightly different times and stack into the wash you hear as echo.

Play the vocal alone and focus on what happens right after each phrase. If the sound keeps ringing out into the silence, that tail is reverb. A short, quick decay is mild. A long, obvious wash is heavy.

A hard gate is the classic way people make reverb worse. If the vocal starts sounding clipped, stuttery, or like it is being switched on and off, you have gone too far. Back off the threshold, lengthen the release, and reduce by fewer dB. Gentle and boring beats aggressive and choppy.

2. Trim the room tone with ReaEQ

Rooms tend to add boom and boxiness in the low mids, which makes reverb feel heavier than it is. Add ReaEQ after the gate and do two small moves. Set a high-pass around 80–100 Hz to clear rumble and some of the low room build-up, and try a gentle cut of a few dB somewhere in 200–500 Hz if the take sounds boxy. This does not remove reverb, but it makes what remains sit back and feel less roomy. Treat these as starting ranges and judge by ear, since every room rings differently.

3. Ride the loud tails by hand (optional but effective)

For the worst spots, nothing free beats a volume envelope. Show the track’s volume envelope in REAPER and draw the level down at the end of the phrases where the echo rings out most. It is slower than a plugin, but it is precise, it never sounds like gate chatter, and it costs nothing. On a short clip this alone can do most of the work.

  3. Add soft stuff around the mic. Blankets, a thick duvet behind and beside you, and even a mattress on end will soak up reflections. Hard, bare walls are the enemy.
  4. Point away from bare walls. Aim the mic so the voice travels toward something soft rather than a flat wall or window.

When to reach for a dedicated tool

If the room sound is heavy and you cannot re-record, a purpose-built de-reverb plugin will beat stock REAPER by a wide margin. Modern options such as iZotope RX De-reverb and Waves Clarity Vx DeReverb use machine-learning processing to separate voice from room in ways ReaGate simply cannot. They cost money, and some offer trial or lighter versions, so weigh the price against how important the recording is. For a one-off clip it is often cheaper in time to re-record. For salvage of an irreplaceable take, a dedicated tool is the honest recommendation. There is no free stock magic button, in REAPER or anywhere else.
