Why your vocal sounds boxy in REAPER (and how to fix it)

The good news is that boxiness is a tone problem, not a talent problem. What “boxy” actually means

Every voice carries useful weight and body in the low mids. Boxiness is what you hear when there is too much energy in a narrow part of that region, or when the room adds a resonance that was never in the voice. Audio engineers usually place vocal boxiness somewhere between about 250 Hz and 900 Hz, with the most common trouble spot around 300–500 Hz. That same range also holds the natural body of the voice, which is exactly why boxiness is tricky: cut too hard and the vocal goes thin and hollow instead.

Mud sits lower and feels like a heavy blanket over the whole voice. Boxiness is higher and narrower, a hollow honk that sounds like a small enclosed space. Nasal is higher still and feels pinched. There is some overlap between muddy and boxy around 300–400 Hz, so if the voice is both heavy and hollow you may end up making a small cut in each region rather than one big cut.

Guessing at EQ is how good vocals get over-processed. Confirm the boxiness and find its exact frequency first.

Solo the vocal and listen mid

Play the vocal alone. If it sounds hollow and closed-in on its own, the boxiness is baked into the recording. If it only sounds boxy inside the full mix, the problem may be other instruments, which is a different fix (see below).

Sweep for the resonance

Add ReaEQ, take one band, boost it by about +6 dB with a narrow width, and sweep it slowly from 250 Hz up to about 700 Hz. The spot that jumps out as the most hollow or honky is your box.

Once you find the ugliest frequency, turn that same band into a gentle cut. That is your starting point, not a boost you leave in.

Watch out

A narrow boost always sounds dramatic while you sweep, because you are exaggerating one spot. Do not leave big boosts in. The sweep is only a way to locate the resonance so you can reduce it.

The fix, step by step in REAPER

1. Cut the boxy resonance

Take the band you found during the sweep, set it to a normal band (peaking) shape, and place it at that frequency, usually somewhere in 300–600 Hz. Start with a cut of about 2–4 dB and a medium-to-narrow width. A narrower width lets you pull down the resonance while leaving the body on either side of it mostly intact. Listen for the hollow honk to fade while the voice keeps its weight.

Why a narrow cut here

Boxiness is usually a resonant peak, not a broad tonal tilt, so a targeted cut removes it with the least damage. A wide cut in this region takes out the natural body of the voice along with the box, which trades a hollow sound for a thin one.

2. Add a high-pass if there is rumble too

If the recording also has low rumble or boom underneath the boxiness, set a second ReaEQ band to a high-pass shape around 80–100 Hz. This clears sub-rumble and some proximity boom without thinning the voice, and it stops those low frequencies from adding to the sense of congestion. Skip this step if the low end already sounds clean.

3. Re-check in the mix, then stop

Boxiness is partly a relative problem. Toggle the EQ on and off with the full arrangement playing and make sure you are improving the vocal, not just changing it. If you cut too much, the voice loses body and starts to sound hollow or thin. Back the cut off until the box is gone but the warmth returns, and then stop.

What EQ will not fix

EQ moves tone around, but it cannot undo everything.

A realistic expectation

Removing a boxy resonance makes a vocal noticeably more open and easier to place in a mix. It will not turn a closet recording into a studio vocal, but it reliably gets a home take much closer to finished, which is usually what people actually want.

If it still sounds off

Quick troubleshooting order when the vocal is not improving:

  1. You cut too much. If the voice went thin or hollow, raise the cut back toward 0 dB and try a smaller reduction or a narrower width.
  2. You are in the wrong band. If the problem feels lower and heavier, it is probably mud, not box. If it feels pinched and higher, it is nasal. The vocal EQ cheat sheet maps these ranges so you can aim at the right one.
  3. It is the room, not the EQ. If soloing reveals obvious echo, no EQ setting will fully fix it. Re-recording closer to soft furnishings usually beats any plugin.
  4. It is the mix, not the vocal. If the vocal is fine alone but boxy in context, cut the crowded 300–600 Hz range on the instruments underneath it instead of carving more out of the voice.
