How to fix nasal vocals in REAPER (with stock plugins)

A nasal, honky vocal is usually one loud resonance in the mid-range, most often somewhere between 1 kHz and 2 kHz. Find the exact spot with a narrow EQ boost that you sweep, then turn that band into a small cut of about 2–5 dB with ReaEQ, which ships with REAPER. You can do the whole thing without buying anything. It is usually reducible, though EQ cannot fully remove nasal tone that is built into the way a voice is produced.
“Nasal” is that pinched, honky, talking-through-your-nose quality that makes a vocal sound boxy and a bit cheap. The good news is that most of it lives in one narrow band of frequencies, so once you can find that band you can usually tame it. The catch is that EQ reduces the tone, it does not change how the voice was actually produced, so aim for “less nasal,” not “gone.”
Here is how to hear it, confirm it, and reduce it in REAPER using only ReaEQ, the stock parametric equalizer.
What nasal actually is
Nasality is a resonance. When a lot of the voice’s energy funnels through the nasal cavity, one region of the mid-range gets emphasized and starts to honk. In most voices that region sits between about 800 Hz and 2 kHz, and the strongest “honk” is very often around 1–2 kHz. Some of the character also carries in overtones higher up near 4 kHz.
A few things push a home vocal toward nasal:
- The voice itself. Some people simply have a naturally nasal placement. This is the part EQ can only soften, not remove.
- The mic. Some budget dynamic and USB mics have a hyped presence peak in the upper mids that exaggerates honk. A quick mic or position change can help before any plugin does.
- The room. A small, boxy room can add its own mid-range honk that stacks on top of the voice.
Make sure it is nasal, not muddy or harsh
These three get mixed up a lot, and they live in different places, so the fix is different:
- Muddy is thick and boomy. That is low-mid buildup, usually

3–8 kHz, and it needs a de-esser or a high cut, not a mid cut.

Test it before you touch anything
Do not guess at the frequency. Let the vocal tell you where the honk is.
Add ReaEQ and pick one band
Put ReaEQ on the vocal track. Take a single band and set it to a normal band (peaking) shape.
Boost narrow and sweep
Boost that band by about +6 dB with a fairly narrow width, then sweep it slowly from 800 Hz up to 2 kHz. The spot where the voice honks or quacks the most is your nasal frequency.
Flip the boost into a cut
Once you have found the ugliest spot, turn that same band into a gentle cut. That is your starting point, not a boost you leave in.
A narrow boost sounds bad everywhere while you sweep, because you are exaggerating one spot. That is expected. The boost is only a way to locate the honk. Never leave the boost in.
The fix, step by step in REAPER

1. Cut at the honk you found
Set the band you swept to a band (peaking) cut at that frequency, usually somewhere in 1–2 kHz. Start with a reduction of about 2–5 dB and a moderately narrow width. A common approach is to tighten the width until the honk just disappears, then loosen it slightly so the cut is no wider than it needs to be. Use the smallest cut that does the job.
Nasality is a focused resonance, so a focused cut removes the honk while leaving the rest of the mid-range intact. A wide cut in this area scoops out the body and presence that make a voice sound present and real.
2. Add a little body if it went thin
Cutting the mids can leave a voice feeling light. If that happens, a small boost of a couple of dB down in 150–300 Hz often puts the weight back. On subtle cases this small low boost alone can balance out mild nasality without much of a mid cut at all.
3. Consider a touch off the overtones
If the honk still peeks through, a small cut up near 4 kHz can soften the nasal overtones. Go easy here, since this region also holds useful clarity and consonants. A fraction of a dB is often enough.
4. Re-check in the mix
Judge the result with the full arrangement playing, not just soloed. Toggle the EQ on and off to confirm you are improving the vocal, not just changing it. Nasality that was obvious in solo is sometimes far less of an issue once other instruments fill in around it.

What EQ will not fix
EQ moves tone around, but it has limits here.
- It will not change how the voice is produced. If a singer is naturally very nasal, EQ softens the tone but does not remove it. Some of the fix is technique, such as opening the throat and dropping the soft palate while singing.
- It will not undo room honk baked into the take. A boxy small room adds its own resonance. Recording into something soft, or moving slightly off the mic axis, usually beats any plugin.
- Cut too hard and you get a new problem: a hollow, scooped vocal that sounds like it is missing its middle. If the voice goes lifeless, you have gone too far.
A targeted cut makes a nasal vocal noticeably rounder and less honky, and that is usually enough to make a home take sit properly in a mix. It will not turn one voice into a different voice, and a strongly nasal singer will still read as themselves, just cleaner.
If it still sounds off
Quick troubleshooting order when it is not improving:
- You cut the wrong spot. Re-sweep. The honk can sit anywhere from
800 Hzto2 kHzdepending on the voice, and being 300 Hz off makes the cut do very little. - You cut too much. If the voice went hollow or distant, raise the cut back toward
0 dBand try a smaller reduction with a slightly narrower width. - It is actually harshness. If the ugliness is piercing rather than honky, it is probably up in
3–8 kHz, which is sibilance or harshness, and it needs a de-esser or high cut instead. - It is the mic or the room. If a mic has a strong upper-mid peak, or the room is boxy, fix that at the source. A better position or a duvet behind the singer often does more than EQ.
Nasal vocals come from a mid-range resonance, usually around 1–2 kHz. Find the exact honk with a narrow boost sweep, then cut it a few dB with ReaEQ, add a little 150–300 Hz body if it thins out, and judge it in the full mix. Aim for less nasal, not gone, because EQ softens the tone but cannot rebuild the voice.
