How to record vocals with a USB mic and no interface

You do not need an audio interface. A USB mic is its own audio device, so you plug it straight into the computer and tell REAPER to use it. In Options → Settings → Audio → Device, pick the USB mic as the input. On Windows choose the WASAPI audio system, or ASIO if your mic has its own ASIO driver. On Mac it just shows up under Core Audio. Then add a track, set it to a mono input, record-arm it, and set your level so peaks land around -12 to -6 dBFS. It works, but a USB mic and a separate interface cannot run at the same time on Windows.
Plenty of people buy a USB microphone, open REAPER, hit record, and get silence or an error. The usual reason is that REAPER is still pointed at the computer's built-in sound instead of the mic. A USB mic is a small audio device in its own right, with its own analog-to-digital converter inside, so once you select it as REAPER's device the recording works with no interface at all. This guide walks the whole setup, plus the two things that trip beginners up most: monitoring without an echo, and why you cannot stack a USB mic on top of an interface.
None of this needs paid software or extra hardware. REAPER handles USB mics natively, and every step below uses stock features.
A USB mic is its own audio device
An audio interface exists to turn a regular XLR microphone into something the computer can read, and to give you a headphone output and level controls. A USB mic already has all of that built in. The capsule, the preamp, the converter, and usually a headphone jack are inside the mic body, and the USB cable carries finished digital audio to the computer.
That has one important consequence in REAPER. REAPER talks to a single audio device at a time. When you use a USB mic, that mic is the audio device, so it also becomes where your playback and monitoring come from. This is different from an interface, where one box handles both your mic in and your speakers out. Keep that single-device idea in mind and the rest of the setup makes sense.
Set the USB mic as REAPER's audio device
Plug the mic in directly, ideally to a USB port on the computer itself rather than through a hub, and give the system a few seconds to recognize it. Then open Options → Settings → Audio → Device.
On Windows
Set the Audio system dropdown first, because it decides which devices appear below it.
- WASAPI is the safe default for a plain USB mic. Choose it, then set both the input and, if offered, the output to your USB mic (or set the output to your headphones or speakers). WASAPI works with almost any USB mic and gives reasonable latency.
- ASIO gives the lowest latency, but only if your mic ships its own ASIO driver. Some do, many cheaper ones do not. If yours does, select ASIO and pick that driver.
- ASIO4ALL is a free third-party wrapper that presents a normal USB mic to REAPER as an ASIO device. Use it only if your mic has no official ASIO driver and WASAPI latency is a problem. It can also let you group two separate devices, though that is fiddly and not the place to start.
If REAPER shows no input at all, the mic is not being seen by Windows yet. That is a device problem, not an EQ or level problem, and the fixes are the same ones covered in REAPER has no sound.
On Mac
There is nothing to install. macOS uses Core Audio, and a class-compliant USB mic appears in Options → Settings → Audio → Device as soon as it is plugged in. Select it as the input. If you want the mic in but your headphones or built-in output for playback, you can build a Core Audio Aggregate Device in the Audio MIDI Setup utility and point REAPER at that instead.
In the same Device panel, set the sample rate to 44100 or 48000 Hz and leave it there. A mismatch between the mic, the project, and the output is a common cause of odd pitch or speed, so pick one rate and keep the whole session on it.
Arm a track and set your level
Add a new track with Ctrl+T (Windows) or Cmd+T (Mac). Click the track's record-arm button, then set its input. A single mic is a mono source, so choose the mono input that matches your USB mic rather than a stereo pair. Recording a mono mic as stereo just copies the same signal to two channels and wastes space.
Now set the level. A USB mic has no interface preamp knob, so your gain lives in one of two places: a physical gain dial on the mic itself, or the input slider in the operating system's sound settings. Watch REAPER's track meter while you sing or speak at your loudest, and aim for peaks around -12 to -6 dBFS. That leaves headroom so the loudest words do not clip, which matters because clipped digital audio cannot be repaired later, only softened.
Recording too quietly to be safe is its own problem. A signal that peaks near -30 dBFS forces you to turn it up later, which lifts the mic's own hiss and the room with it. Get a healthy level at the source instead. For the full method, see how to gain stage vocals in REAPER.
Monitor without hearing an echo
This is the step that confuses most first-time USB mic users. If you turn on REAPER's input monitoring and listen through headphones plugged into the computer, you hear your voice a fraction of a second after you actually say it. That slap-back delay is round-trip latency, and it makes singing almost impossible.
Most standalone USB mics solve this in hardware. If your mic has a headphone jack on its body, plug your headphones in there. You then hear yourself instantly, straight off the mic, with zero latency, because the sound never makes the trip through the computer and back. When you do this, turn REAPER's software input monitoring off on that track, or you will hear yourself twice.
If your mic has no headphone jack, you have to monitor through REAPER, so keep the delay small. Lower the audio block size in the Device panel to something like 128 or 256 samples, which shortens the delay at the cost of a little more CPU. Why you cannot use a USB mic and an interface together
Because REAPER uses one audio device at a time, you generally cannot record a USB mic and a separate audio interface in the same session on Windows. Under ASIO especially, you pick a single driver, and it is either the mic or the interface, not both. If you own an interface, plug an XLR mic into it and use the interface as your device. If all you have is the USB mic, use the mic as your device. Trying to run both is the source of a lot of no-input confusion.
There are workarounds, but treat them as advanced. On Windows, ASIO4ALL can sometimes combine two devices; on Mac, an Aggregate Device is the clean way to do it. Neither is worth setting up for a single voice. If you need to record two people, a two-input interface or a multitrack USB mixer is a far more reliable path than stacking USB mics.

What this setup will not do
Getting the signal path right is only the capture stage. It has limits worth naming up front.
- It will not improve the sound of the mic. A thin, harsh, or roomy USB mic still sounds that way once it is in REAPER. That is a tone and technique problem covered in why your budget condenser mic sounds bad.
- It will not remove monitoring latency if your mic has no headphone jack. A small block size reduces it, but only hardware direct monitoring removes it completely.
- It will not let you cleanly record two USB mics as separate tracks without extra setup, and even then the result is less stable than a proper multi-input interface.
- It cannot rescue a clipped take. If the loudest words distorted on the way in, lower the gain and record again rather than trying to fix it after.
A USB mic is a complete audio device, so no interface is needed. Select it in Options → Settings → Audio → Device (WASAPI or ASIO on Windows, Core Audio on Mac), arm a mono track, and set peaks to -12 to -6 dBFS. Monitor through the mic's own headphone jack to kill the echo, and remember that on Windows the mic and a separate interface cannot run at once.
