How to gain stage vocals in REAPER (set the right recording level)

Gain staging a vocal just means setting the recording level so the loudest part peaks with room to spare and never touches 0 dBFS, where digital clipping happens. Record in 24-bit, then set the gain knob on your audio interface (not REAPER’s track fader) so your loudest sung part peaks somewhere around -12 to -6 dBFS, with the average sitting near -18 dBFS. That leaves headroom so you never clip, and 24-bit recording is quiet enough that you do not need to record loud. Get it right once and it prevents most level problems before they start.
Gain staging sounds like a technical term, but for a home vocal it is one simple decision: how loud should the signal be when it hits REAPER? Set it too high and the loudest words clip and distort, which you cannot undo later. Set it far too low and you have to crank the level afterward, which lifts the room hiss along with the voice. The good news is there is a comfortable middle range that works almost every time, and REAPER shows you exactly where you are with its built-in meters.
This article is about the level going in, before any EQ or compression. It is prevention, not repair. If a take is already clipped, this will not save it, and there is a separate fix for that below.
What gain staging actually means
Every point where audio passes through a knob or a plugin is a “stage,” and each one has a level. Gain staging is keeping those levels sensible so nothing overloads and the noise floor stays low. For recording a vocal, the stage that matters most is the very first one: the gain (sometimes labeled “gain,” “trim,” or “preamp”) on your audio interface, which decides how hot the signal is before it is ever converted to digital.
The hard ceiling in the digital world is 0 dBFS, which stands for zero decibels full scale. There is nothing above it. When a peak tries to go past 0 dBFS, the tops of the waveform get chopped flat and you get a nasty crackle or edge baked permanently into the file. Headroom is simply the gap you leave between your loudest peak and that ceiling.
Set the gain in the right place
This trips up almost every beginner, so it is worth being clear. Three different controls affect “how loud” a vocal is, and only one of them changes what actually gets recorded.
- The interface gain knob. This sets the recording level. It is the only control that changes the strength of the signal being captured, and it is where gain staging happens. Turn this to set your level.
- REAPER’s track fader (volume). This changes playback level only. It does nothing to the recorded file. Turning it up on a clipped take does not un-clip anything.
- Your headphone or monitor volume. This changes only how loud you hear it. It has no effect on the recording at all.
If your peaks are too hot, do not “fix” it by pulling down the track fader in REAPER. The clipping already happened at the interface, before REAPER saw the signal. You have to turn down the actual gain knob and record the part again.
Where to aim
These are starting ranges, not exact rules. The goal is consistent, safe levels, not a magic number.
- Record in 24-bit. In REAPER this is set under
File › Project Settings › Media(or Preferences › Recording for the default format). 24-bit gives you a huge, quiet dynamic range, which is exactly why you can afford to leave headroom instead of recording hot. - Loudest peaks around
-12 to -6 dBFS. Set the interface gain so the loudest, most belted moment of the performance lands in that zone. That keeps a safe margin below0 dBFSfor a take that comes in louder than the soundcheck, which happens constantly with singers. - Average level near
-18 dBFS. The bulk of the vocal, the normal-volume words, will sit lower than the peaks, and around-18 dBFSis a comfortable, time-tested spot. It lines up with the old analog0 VUreference and gives plugins a level they are happy with later.
On 24-bit there is no audible quality benefit to recording loud. Pushing peaks up toward -1 dBFS only removes your safety margin and invites clipping on the one take that matters. Moderate levels with headroom sound identical and are far safer.
Set it in REAPER, step by step
Arm the track and turn on input monitoring
Record-arm your vocal track and enable input monitoring so the track meter shows the incoming signal. REAPER’s track meter reads in dBFS, with 0 at the very top.
Soundcheck the loudest part
Have the singer perform the loudest section they will actually sing, at real performance energy, not a polite test line. You are setting the level for the peaks, so you need to hear the peaks.
Adjust the interface gain
Watch the meter and turn the interface gain knob until those loudest moments peak around -12 to -6 dBFS. If it is slamming near the top, turn the knob down. If it barely moves off the floor, turn it up.
Give yourself a little margin
Leave a few dB of extra room below your loudest soundcheck peak. Real takes are almost always a bit louder than the rehearsal, and that margin is what saves them.
A few newer interfaces capture in 32-bit float, which is effectively clip-proof at the recording stage, so exact input level matters far less. Most home setups are standard 24-bit, though, so unless you know you have 32-bit float, set your level with headroom as above.

What gain staging will not fix
Setting the right level prevents a specific set of problems. It is not a tone or quality tool.

- It will not change the tone of the voice. A muddy, nasal, or harsh recording is still muddy, nasal, or harsh at a perfect level. Those are EQ problems, not level problems.
- It will not remove room sound or noise already in the take. Good levels keep the noise floor low relative to the voice, but they do not clean up a noisy room.
- It cannot make a quiet, distant performance sound close. Mic technique and distance do that, not the gain knob.
If it still sounds off
Quick troubleshooting order when the level seems right but something is wrong:
- Still clipping at a low meter reading? The overload may be at the interface preamp before the meter. Turn the physical gain knob down even if REAPER is not showing red.
- Meter looks fine but it is faint and hissy. Check that you set the interface gain and not the track fader, and that the mic is close enough. A distant source forces you to over-amplify.
