How to use parallel compression on vocals in REAPER

It is sometimes called New York compression, and every REAPER install can do it with stock plugins. Below are two ways to set it up, from fastest to most flexible, plus starting settings and an honest list of what it will not do.

What parallel compression actually is

Regular compression turns down the loudest parts of a signal so the overall level is more even. Push it too far on a vocal and you flatten the dynamics that make it sound alive. Parallel compression avoids that trade by running two signals at once:

When you blend the compressed copy quietly underneath the dry one, the compression mostly raises the quiet detail (breaths, tails, low-level consonants) rather than clamping the peaks. The result is a vocal that sounds fuller and more consistent while still breathing. Because you are adding the two signals rather than replacing one with the other, you keep the transients you would otherwise lose.

When to reach for it (and when not to)

Parallel compression earns its place when a vocal is technically fine but feels thin, small, or inconsistent in the mix, dipping away in quiet phrases and never quite feeling glued. It is a density and consistency tool.

It is the wrong tool when the real problem is tone or performance. If the vocal is muddy, boxy, or harsh, that is an EQ or de-esser job first. If notes are out of tune or timing is loose, no amount of compression fixes that. Reach for parallel compression after the recording is clean and roughly balanced, not before.

Do the basics first

Parallel compression sits near the end of the chain. Get your levels set with good gain staging, clear obvious tone problems with EQ, and apply your everyday vocal compression settings first. Then use parallel compression to add the last bit of weight.

Method 1: one ReaComp with the wet/dry sliders (fastest)

ReaComp, REAPER’s stock compressor, has separate Wet and Dry faders on the left side of its window. That means you can do parallel compression inside a single plugin, no routing required. This is the quickest way to try the effect.

Add ReaComp to the vocal track

Open the vocal track’s FX chain and add ReaComp. If you already run a compressor for everyday leveling, add this as a second, separate instance so the two jobs stay independent.

Set it to compress hard

Pull the Threshold down until you see a lot of gain reduction on the loud parts, often 10–20 dB. Set a high Ratio, somewhere around 4:1 up to 10:1 or more. Use a fast Attack and a medium Release. It should sound too crushed on its own, that is expected.

Blend the dry signal back in

Raise the Dry slider from off until the uncompressed vocal returns underneath the compressed one. Start with the compressed (Wet) signal clearly quieter than the dry, then nudge it up until the voice thickens and steadies without sounding squashed.

Two “wet” controls, one job

REAPER also adds its own Wet knob to the top of every plugin window. That knob crossfades between the plugin’s output and the original, while ReaComp’s own Wet and Dry sliders add the two together. Either can give you a parallel blend. Pick one and leave the other at its default so you are not fighting yourself.

Method 2: a dedicated parallel track (more control)

Blending inside one plugin is fast, but a separate compressed track gives you far more room to shape the effect. This is the method most engineers default to, because you can EQ or saturate the compressed copy on its own and ride its level from the mixer.

Create a parallel track and send to it

Crush ReaComp on the parallel track only

Put ReaComp on the parallel track and set it to compress hard, the same low-threshold, high-ratio, fast-attack starting point as Method 1. Leave the Dry slider off here, because the dry vocal already exists on the original track.

Pull the parallel fader down, then up to taste

Start with the parallel track’s fader all the way down. Raise it slowly under the main vocal until the voice gains weight and stops disappearing in quiet moments. If you want, add a gentle EQ after the compressor to shape only the compressed layer.

They stay in time

With stock ReaComp there is no added latency, so the compressed copy lines up with the original. REAPER also applies automatic plugin delay compensation, so even a plugin that does add latency stays aligned. That is why this simple send-based setup does not cause the phase problems people sometimes worry about.

Starting settings, not universal presets

Every voice and mix is different, so treat these as a place to begin and then trust your ears in the full mix.

Dial the blend by ear. A useful test is to bring the compressed layer up until you clearly hear it thickening the voice, then back it off slightly. You almost always want less than it takes to notice it as an obvious effect.
