How to make vocals wider in REAPER with stock plugins

Real stereo width comes from real stereo material, so the widest and most reliable result is a vocal you actually recorded twice, or separate harmony parts, panned apart. A single lead vocal is usually meant to sit in the center. You can still add apparent width to one take in REAPER with stock plugins: a light detune with ReaPitch, a short delay on one side with ReaDelay, or stereo reverb and delay around a centered dry vocal. Every one of these has a cost in mono, so check mono with the master track’s mono button before you commit. Keep the moves small.
“Wide” usually means the vocal seems to spread across the speakers instead of sitting in one spot between them. Before you reach for a plugin, it helps to know the honest answer: a lead vocal that carries the song is almost always kept centered and fairly mono, and that is a feature, not a limitation. Width is mostly for doubles, harmonies, and background vocals, and for the space around the voice rather than the voice itself. What “wide” actually means
A truly wide sound needs different information in the left and right channels. Two channels that are identical play as a single point in the center, which is exactly what a mono vocal is. So there are only two honest ways to widen a voice: give the two channels genuinely different content, or add stereo effects around it. Anything that fakes difference from one take, by copying and shifting it, buys width by introducing small timing or pitch differences, and those differences can partly cancel when the two sides are summed to mono.
That mono question matters more than people expect. Phone speakers, many Bluetooth speakers, club systems, and a lot of laptop playback are mono or near-mono. If your width depends on a hard-panned copy that cancels in mono, the vocal can turn thin or hollow for a big share of listeners. That is why the last step here is always a mono check.
Start with real width, not a trick
The best-sounding width is recorded, not processed. If the part matters, this beats every plugin move below.
Record a genuine double
Sing the same line a second time on a new track, then pan the two takes apart, for example one at 40–60% left and one the same amount right. Use separate harmony parts

Keep the lead centered
Pan your doubles and harmonies wide, but leave the main lead in the middle. A centered lead with wide support around it reads as “big” far more convincingly than a lead you tried to smear across the stereo field.
Add width to a take you already have
Sometimes you only have one take and cannot re-record. These stock methods add apparent width. Treat every number as a starting range, not a preset, and listen in the full mix.
1. A light detune with ReaPitch
Duplicate the vocal to a second track. On one copy add ReaPitch and nudge it up a few cents, then on the other copy nudge it down by the same amount, somewhere around +5 to +12 cents on one side and -5 to -12 on the other. Pan the two copies apart and keep them a few dB under the original. ReaPitch also lets you add more than one shifter in a single instance, each with its own pan, if you prefer to keep it on one track. This is a chorus-style thickening, so use it gently. Too much and the vocal sounds seasick or obviously processed.
Small pitch offsets make the two sides slightly different, which is what your ears read as width. Because it is still built from one take, it is not fully mono-safe, so keep the detuned copies quiet and always check the mono sum.
2. A short delay on one side with ReaDelay
Duplicate the vocal, pan the copy to one side, and add ReaDelay set to a single short delay of roughly 10–30 ms with no feedback. A delay under about 40 ms is heard as one wider sound rather than an echo, which is the Haas or precedence effect. It gives an immediate sense of spread, but it is the least mono-safe method here, because summing a signal with a short-delayed copy of itself causes comb filtering that can sound hollow. 3. Stereo space around a centered vocal
Often the goal is not a wider voice but a wider sense of space. Leave the dry vocal centered and mono, then send it to a stereo reverb (ReaVerbate or ReaVerb) or a stereo delay (ReaDelay) that spreads left and right. Both stock reverbs include a width control for the reverb tail. This widens the ambience while the vocal itself stays anchored and solid, which is the safest way to make a lead feel big. Keep the effects low enough that the words stay clear and do not wash out. Always check mono before you commit
Flip the master to mono
REAPER’s master track has a mono button, and right-clicking it gives you options including L+R (a normal mono sum) and L-R (the difference, which is your sides only). Sum to L+R and listen.
Listen for collapse
If the vocal gets noticeably thinner, more hollow, or quieter in mono, a width trick is partly cancelling. That is the phase cost of the delay or detune copies.
Back off until it holds up
Reduce the level of the widened copies, shorten the delay, or lean more on stereo reverb and less on hard-panned copies, until the mono version still sounds full. Then switch back to stereo.
Width almost always sounds impressive in stereo on headphones, which is where it is easy to overdo. The real test is whether it survives mono and still helps in the full mix. Judge it there, not soloed on headphones.

What widening will not do
Width is a placement effect, not a repair.
- It will not fix a muddy, harsh, or dull tone. Sort the EQ first, because a wide bad tone is just a wider problem. Start with the REAPER stock vocal chain.
- It will not turn a mono lead into a legitimately stereo one without a tradeoff. If the song needs a big lead, a centered lead with wide doubles and reverb around it is the honest way to get there.
- It will not survive mono if you rely on hard-panned delay or detune tricks. Expect part of the width to disappear on phones and small speakers.
- It cannot match a real double. Faked width from one take always sounds a little artificial next to two genuine performances.
Used lightly, these moves make a chorus feel bigger and a mix feel more three dimensional. Used heavily, they make vocals sound smeared, phasey, and weak in mono. The wins here are small and deliberate, not dramatic.
If it sounds worse
- It went thin or hollow. That is comb filtering from a delay or detune copy. Lower those copies, shorten the delay, or remove the trick and use stereo reverb instead.
- It sounds seasick. The detune is too strong. Pull the cents closer to zero.
- The lead lost focus. You widened the main vocal itself. Re-center the lead and put the width on doubles, harmonies, and effects around it.
- It vanishes in mono. Rebalance toward recorded doubles and separate parts, which are the only options that stay wide when the channels sum.
The most reliable vocal width is recorded: a real double or separate harmony parts, panned apart, with the lead kept centered. To widen a single take in REAPER, use a light ReaPitch detune, a short ReaDelay on one side, or stereo reverb and delay around a centered voice. Keep every move small and check the master mono button, because the tricks that add the most width are the ones that cost the most in mono.
