How to record and layer harmony and background vocals in REAPER

The fullest, most natural stacks come from recording each harmony as its own separate part, then blending them in the mix. Put each part on its own track, pan them out to the sides, keep them a few dB below the lead, and thin their low end so they support the lead instead of competing with it. REAPER can also generate harmonies from a single take with the stock plugins ReaPitch and ReaVoice, which is fast but has real limits. Everything here uses plugins that ship with REAPER, so there is nothing to buy.
A single lead vocal can sound bare, especially in a chorus. Harmony and background vocals are how a home recording starts to sound produced: the chorus lifts, the hook feels wider, and the whole thing gains depth. The problem most people hit is not recording the parts, it is that once they stack four or five vocals the result gets cluttered, boxy, or weirdly loud, and the lead gets buried.
This is a mixing and arrangement problem more than a gear problem. Below is a workflow that keeps a stack clear: how to arrange the parts, how to record them cleanly in REAPER, and how to pan, level, and EQ them so they sit behind the lead. Then, because it is a fair question, when the stock harmony plugins are a reasonable shortcut and when they are not.
Doubling means singing the same notes again to thicken and widen a part. Harmony means singing different notes (a third or a fifth above or below, an octave up or down) that fit the chord. Arrange the parts before you record
Decide what you are actually singing before you hit record. A cluttered stack is usually a stack with no plan. A few reliable starting points:
- The obvious harmony. A third above the melody is the most common pop and folk harmony. A third below sounds warmer and less bright. Try both against the chord and keep the one that fits.
- The octave. Doubling the melody an octave up (or down for a low, breathy layer) adds size without introducing a new note that could clash.
- Save stacks for where they matter. Most songs do not need harmonies on every line. Bringing them in only on the chorus or the hook makes those sections feel bigger by contrast.
- Two singers is often plenty. A lead plus one well-placed harmony, each sung twice, sounds fuller than five random parts fighting each other.
If you are not sure a note is in the chord, play the chord on a keyboard or guitar and hum against it. The right harmony locks in and almost disappears into the chord; a wrong one beats or sounds sour.
Record each part on its own track in REAPER
The cleanest approach is one part per track. It keeps every layer editable, panable, and mutable on its own, which is exactly the control you need later.
Add a new track per part
With the lead finished, add a new track for the first harmony (Ctrl+T on Windows). Name it something you will recognize later, like "Harm 3rd up" or "BGV octave." Record the part, then add another track for the next part. Keeping parts on separate tracks, rather than stacked as takes on one track, makes panning and balancing far easier.
Record each part at least twice
For anything you want to sound wide and thick, sing the same harmony part two or more times and pan the copies apart. Two takes of a third, hard left and hard right, sound bigger and more natural than one take spread artificially. Ad-libs and one-off answer phrases are the exception; those are usually single takes.
Group them in a folder
Select your background vocal tracks and make them a folder (right-click a track control, Make folder from selected tracks, or drag them under a parent). The folder parent becomes a single fader and FX point for the whole stack, so you can turn all the harmonies up or down together and process them as one group.

Make the stack sit behind the lead
This is where most home stacks go wrong. Background vocals are meant to support the lead, not match it. Three moves, in order, fix the large majority of cluttered stacks. Treat the numbers as starting points and judge everything with the full mix playing.
1. Pan them out of the center
The lead vocal usually lives in the center. If you leave harmonies there too, they pile up on top of it and everything sounds congested. Pan pairs of matched takes out to the sides. A doubled third might go hard left and hard right; a second pair can sit partway out, around halfway. Spreading the stack across the stereo field opens space in the middle for the lead.
2. Pull the level down
Set the background vocal folder noticeably below the lead. A common starting range is a few dB down for prominent harmonies and further down for subtle support layers, then adjust to taste. The test is simple: you should feel the stack more than you consciously hear it. If a listener's ear jumps to the harmony instead of the lead, it is too loud.
3. Thin their low end and tame what competes
Add ReaEQ to the background vocal folder and high-pass the whole group a little higher than you would the lead, often somewhere around 100–150 Hz, because backing vocals rarely need much weight down low and that low-mid energy is what makes a stack sound thick and boxy. You can also gently dip the low mids (roughly 200–400 Hz) on the group. Cutting body from the backing parts leaves the low end to the lead and instantly declutters the stack. Because the backing vocals are in a folder, one instance of a reverb or delay on the parent bus places the whole stack in the same space and helps them read as a single unit sitting behind the lead. Slightly more reverb on the backing vocals than on the lead pushes them further back, which is usually what you want. The shortcut: harmonies from a single take
Sometimes you cannot sing the harmony, or you just want to sketch an idea fast. REAPER ships with two stock plugins that generate pitch-shifted harmonies from one recorded vocal.
- ReaPitch raises or lowers pitch and can create harmony effects on vocals. You add multiple "shifters" in one instance, each set to its own interval (for example
+3or+4semitones for a third,+7for a fifth), and each shifter has its own volume and pan. It can also shift formants, which helps a pitched-up part sound less like a chipmunk. - ReaVoice is a MIDI-controlled multi-voice pitch shifter. You send the vocal to a track running ReaVoice and play the harmony notes on a MIDI keyboard, so the harmony follows exactly the chords you play rather than a fixed interval.

Pitch shifting copies one performance, so an artificial harmony shares the lead's timing, vibrato, and pronunciation exactly. That is what makes it sound synthetic and static up close, especially by intervals larger than a few semitones or when pitched far up. It also cannot add a new performance: the human differences between two real takes, the tiny timing and tuning variations, are exactly what make a stack sound rich. Use the plugins to sketch or to thicken, but for an exposed chorus harmony, a part you actually sing will almost always sound better.
A realistic expectation
Well-arranged, well-balanced background vocals are one of the biggest steps from a demo toward a finished-sounding recording, and none of it requires a paid plugin. What layering cannot do is rescue a shaky lead or a bad room; it adds to a solid foundation rather than replacing one. Get the lead and the recording right first, then stack.
For the best result, sing each harmony as its own part on its own track, record the ones you want wide at least twice, and group them in a folder. Then pan the pairs out, set the group a few dB below the lead, and high-pass and thin their low mids so they support the lead instead of crowding it.
