Why two vocal tracks sound hollow or thin together in REAPER

If two vocal tracks each sound fine alone but get thinner, hollow, or weaker in the low end when you play them together, that is a phase problem, not something an EQ can fix. It happens when a voice is captured by two mics, or when you stack a real double or a copied take, and the two versions do not line up. Try the polarity (phase) button in the track control panel first. If that does not fully fix it, line the two takes up at the sample level so their waveforms match. Both are built into REAPER, so this costs nothing.
A single vocal that combines two signals is one of the most confusing problems for a home producer, because nothing looks broken. Each track plays back clearly on its own. It is only when they are heard together that the voice loses body and starts to sound distant, boxy, or oddly quiet, especially down low. That is the signature of phase cancellation, and once you can spot it, it is usually quick to fix.
This comes up in three common situations: recording one voice with two mics at once, blending a close mic with a room mic, or layering a second vocal take under the lead to make it bigger. In each case you now have two versions of very similar sound, and if they do not agree in timing or polarity, parts of them cancel out.
The one-minute test that proves it is phase
Before you change anything, confirm the problem, because the fix for phase is completely different from an EQ or reverb fix.
Play each track on its own
Solo the first track, then the second. If each one sounds full and normal by itself, the recordings are fine.
Now play them together
Unsolo so both play at once. Two versions of the same voice should sound louder and fuller together, never weaker.
Listen for the drop
If the combined sound is thinner, hollow, or loses low end compared to either track alone, the two are fighting each other. That is phase cancellation, not tone.
Adding a second copy of a sound should build it up. When adding it instead tears it down, the only thing that can do that is one signal partly canceling the other. So a combined sound that is quieter or emptier than its parts is the clearest sign you have a phase issue.
The two things that go wrong (they are not the same)
Two different problems both get called phase, and they have different fixes, so it helps to separate them.
Polarity. One waveform is flipped upside down relative to the other. Where one signal pushes, the other pulls, and they cancel. This is common when a signal is split, when gear is wired oppositely, or sometimes with a mic placed on the opposite side of a source. Polarity is an instant fix.
Timing. The two signals are the same way up but arrive at slightly different moments, because one mic sat farther from the mouth, or one take was sung a hair late. When two near-identical sounds are stacked a fraction of a millisecond apart, some frequencies reinforce and others cancel across the spectrum. Engineers call the resulting hollow, filtered sound comb filtering.
The button most DAWs and mixers label “phase” actually flips polarity: it turns the waveform upside down by 180 degrees. True phase is about timing. The names get used loosely, but the distinction is why the polarity button fixes some phase problems instantly and does nothing for others. If flipping it does not help, your problem is timing, not polarity.
Fix 1: try the polarity button first
It takes one click and it either solves the problem or rules polarity out, so always start here.
In REAPER, each track has a polarity (phase) toggle in its track control panel, the strip of controls to the left of the track. If you do not see it, widen the track height or hover the small control area until the round polarity button appears. Click it to flip that track, and listen to the two tracks together.
- If the low end and body suddenly return and the voice sounds full again, leave the flip on. You are done.
- If nothing changes, or it sounds worse, turn it back off. Your problem is timing, so move to Fix 2.
REAPER’s polarity button lives in the monitoring and playback chain, so it changes what you hear without altering the recorded audio file. You can flip it back at any time with no loss.
Fix 2: line the two takes up
When polarity is not the issue, the two signals are offset in time, and the fix is to move one so their waveforms line up.
Zoom in on a shared transient
Find a loud, sharp moment both tracks captured, such as a hard consonant or the start of a word. Zoom the timeline in until you can see the individual wiggles of each waveform.
Turn off snapping and slide one track
Disable snap so you can move freely, then drag the item on one track a tiny amount left or right until its peaks sit directly above the other track’s peaks. Nudging by a few samples at a time is usually all it takes.
Judge it by ear as you go
The moment the two line up, the low end and weight come back. Keep the position that sounds fullest, not the one that merely looks tidy.
If you want a second opinion beyond your ears, REAPER ships a stock goniometer, a JS metering plugin, that reads how well the left and right channels agree. Temporarily pan the two takes hard left and right and add it to the master. A reading that leans positive means the two are summing well, while a reading that swings negative means they are canceling. Use it to confirm what you are hearing, then pan the takes back.
Only nudge takes into alignment when they are meant to be the same performance, like one voice on two mics. Do not tightly align two genuinely different takes of a real double. Their small natural differences are exactly what make a double sound wide and human, and lining them up perfectly throws that away.
Fix it at the source next time
Phase problems are far easier to avoid than to repair, so a little care while recording saves the cleanup.
- Use one mic when one mic will do. A single close mic on a home vocal cannot have a phase problem with itself. Two mics are only worth the risk when you have a clear reason for them.
- Follow the 3:1 rule with two mics. If you must use two mics on one voice, keep the distance between the mics at least three times the distance from each mic to the mouth. That large gap keeps the quieter, delayed spill from each mic low enough that it does not comb-filter the main one.
- For a bigger vocal, sing a real second take. A genuine second performance stacked with the first sounds wide and full. What flipping phase will not do
Fixing phase restores the body and clarity a combined vocal lost. It does not do everything.
- It will not rescue a single track that already sounds thin on its own. That is a tone problem, covered in how to fix thin vocals in REAPER, not a phase problem.
- It cannot fully undo severe comb filtering baked into a badly miked recording. Alignment helps, but two mics placed carelessly may never sum perfectly, which is why the 3:1 rule matters at the source.
- It will not fix timing that drifts across a take. If two performances wander in and out of sync line by line, that is editing and comping work, not a single alignment nudge.
If it still sounds off
Quick troubleshooting order when the combined vocal is not improving:
- You flipped the wrong track, or flipped both. Polarity only needs to change on one of the two tracks. If both are flipped, you are back where you started. Reset both, then flip just one.
- You aligned takes that should stay different. If a real double lost its width after nudging, you aligned it too tightly. Move it back so the two performances breathe.
- It is one voice through two mics with a big distance gap. Alignment helps, but if the room mic is very delayed you may be better off lowering or muting it and keeping the close mic.
- It was never a phase issue. If soloing one track already sounds thin, hollow, or boxy, treat that track’s tone directly instead. When you are recording two people rather than one voice, spacing and bleed are the bigger concern, covered in how to record two people in REAPER.
When two vocal tracks sound weaker together than apart, it is phase cancellation. Prove it by soloing each track and then playing both. Click the track polarity button first, and if that does not fix it, zoom in and slide one take until its waveform lines up with the other. Best of all, avoid it at the record stage with one mic, the 3:1 rule, or a real second take.
