How to remove wind noise and low rumble in REAPER

Steady low rumble (traffic, HVAC, a desk thump) lives below your voice and comes out cleanly with a high-pass filter in ReaEQ, starting around 80–120 Hz. Steady low-level wind hiss can be reduced with ReaFIR in Subtract mode using a noise profile taken from a quiet gap. But loud gusts that thump and roar right into the mic are broadband and overload the capsule, and no stock plugin fully removes them. When the wind is only in the low end you can usually rescue the take; when it buffets the whole recording, plan to re-record with a windscreen.
If your outdoor or desk recording is buried under wind and low rumble, the first thing to do is figure out which of the two you actually have, because they need different fixes. Rumble is low-frequency energy under the voice and it filters out easily. Wind buffeting is the roaring, thumping sound of air hitting the microphone directly, and that is a much harder problem. Wind noise and rumble are two different problems
They get lumped together, but they sit in different places and respond differently to processing.
- Low rumble is steady, low-frequency energy mostly below
100 Hz: traffic, air conditioning, a fridge, footsteps, a hand bumping the desk or stand. You feel it more than hear it, and it muddies everything above it. This part is very fixable. - Wind buffeting is air moving across the mic capsule. It produces low thumps and a broadband roar, and a strong gust can push the capsule into distortion. This part is only partly fixable, and sometimes not fixable at all.
The reason this matters: a high-pass filter is a frequency tool, so it removes the low rumble reliably, but it can only shave the bottom off a gust, not the roar that spreads up into the same range as the voice. Knowing which you are dealing with tells you whether to reach for a filter or for the record button.
Test what you actually have before filtering
Two minutes of listening saves you from over-processing a take that was mostly fine, or wasting time on one that cannot be saved.
Find a speech gap and solo it
Play a spot where nobody is talking. If you hear a low, steady hum or roar, that is rumble or steady wind. If you hear sharp thumps and a rushing surge, those are gusts.
Watch the low end
Drop a ReaEQ on the track and look at the analyzer. Rumble shows as a raised shelf of energy hugging the far left, below the voice. Gusts show as big, brief spikes that jump around.
Check for distortion
Zoom into a loud gust in the waveform. If the peaks are flattened or clipped, the capsule was overloaded and that moment cannot be cleaned up, only cut or covered.
If a gust clipped the mic on the way in, the information is gone. A filter changes the tone of the damage, it does not restore the sound underneath. Treat clipped gusts as edits to remove, not noise to filter.
The fix in REAPER, step by step
Everything below uses plugins that ship with REAPER, so there is nothing to buy. Work in this order and stop as soon as it sounds clean, because each stage can be pushed too far.
1. High-pass the rumble with ReaEQ
Add ReaEQ to the track. Take the first band and set its type to high pass, then place it around 80–120 Hz to start. For a deep male voice keep it lower, near 70–90 Hz, so you do not thin the voice; for a spoken or higher voice you can often push to 100–140 Hz. If rumble is still poking through, steepen the filter by narrowing the band's bandwidth rather than dragging the cutoff up into the voice.
A speaking or singing voice carries almost nothing useful below about 80 Hz. Nearly everything down there is room, handling, and rumble, so cutting it clears space without changing the voice you want to keep. 2. Subtract steady wind with ReaFIR
If a low, steady wind hiss remains after the high-pass, ReaFIR can reduce it. Add ReaFIR after the EQ and set the mode to Subtract. Tick Automatically build noise profile (enable during noise), then play a stretch of the recording that is only the wind with no speech. ReaFIR learns the shape of that noise. Untick the box to freeze the profile, and it keeps subtracting that fingerprint from the whole track.
Start gentle. If you hear watery, underwater artifacts on the voice, you are subtracting too hard, so shorten the noise sample or back off. ReaFIR only works on steady noise, so it handles a constant breeze but does nothing for changing gusts.

3. Handle the gusts by hand
Changing gusts are the part no static filter fixes. Options, roughly best to worst for the listener:
- Cut or replace the moment. If a gust lands in a pause, split the item and delete or silence it. This is the cleanest result.
- Ride a heavier low cut only during gusts. Automate a second high-pass or a low-shelf cut so it clamps down when the wind hits and releases when it passes. This tames the thump without gutting the whole track.
- Duck the low end dynamically. ReaXcomp set to compress only a low band can pull down the rumble surges of a gust while leaving the voice band alone. Use a light hand; heavy settings pump.
None of these rebuild the voice that the gust drowned out. They reduce how distracting it is, which is often the realistic goal.

What this will not fix
Filters and noise subtraction move a lot, but they have hard limits with wind.
- They will not remove broadband buffeting that spreads into the voice range. Once the roar is on top of the words, cutting it also cuts the words.
- They will not restore a clipped gust. Overload is lost information, not a tone you can dial back.

When the wind is only in the low end, a high-pass alone can make a recording sound clean and usable. When it buffets the whole take, the honest answer is that prevention beats repair: a foam windscreen or a furry cover, backing the mic off the wind, or using your body as a block will save a recording that no plugin can.
If it still sounds wrong
Quick troubleshooting order when the take is not improving:
- The voice went thin. Your high-pass is too high. Pull the cutoff back down toward
80 Hzuntil the chest and body return. - The voice sounds watery. ReaFIR is subtracting too hard, or your noise sample included speech. Rebuild the profile from a cleaner gap and reduce the amount.
- It is clicks and pops, not wind. If the problem is short crackles and ticks rather than a low roar, that is a different repair, covered in how to fix crackle and clicks in a recording.
- The gusts still dominate. There is no setting left to try. Edit the worst moments out, and re-record with a windscreen next time.
Separate the two problems first. High-pass steady rumble in ReaEQ around 80–120 Hz, subtract steady wind hiss with ReaFIR from a noise-only gap, and handle gusts by editing or automating a low cut.
