The best free pitch correction plugins for vocals (and when ReaTune is enough)

Published October 14, 2026

Quick answer

If you are in REAPER you already own a tuner. ReaTune ships with the program and handles gentle correction on a single clean vocal, so the honest first answer is to try it before downloading anything. Install something else when ReaTune is specifically getting in your way. Of the free options, Auburn Sounds Graillon 3 Free Edition is the fastest to get a usable result from, MeldaProduction MAutoPitch is the simplest set-and-forget automatic tuner, and Session Loops PitchNet is the one to look at if you want to fix individual notes on a piano roll rather than ride a correction curve. All three were free on the day this was written. None of them tunes a performance that was not committed in the first place.

“Which free autotune should I get” is one of the most asked questions in home vocal recording, and the answer most lists give is a ranked table of nine downloads. That is the wrong shape for a REAPER user, because one of the candidates is already installed and the question is really what would the download add.

So this article does it in that order. Criteria first, then what the stock tuner actually covers, then the three free plugins that add something ReaTune does not, then the part the roundups skip: what pitch correction cannot do for you at any price.

The criteria, set before picking anything

A comparison is only worth reading if the standard was fixed before the picks were chosen. For a home vocal in REAPER, a free tuner has to:

Start with what REAPER already has

REAPER, currently version 7.82 released October 4, 2026, ships with ReaTune as part of its stock plugin set. It has three tabs: a tuning meter for checking pitch, an automatic correction mode, and a manual correction mode.

Automatic mode gives you a key name from A to G sharp, a key mode or scale that defaults to Chromatic, individual on and off switches for all twelve notes, an attack time that sets how long after a note starts the correction begins, and a choice of pitch-shifting algorithm including three elastique 2.1 variants. Manual mode draws the detected pitch as a graph so you can place correction bars only on the notes that need them.

That is a real tuner, not a token one. The default Chromatic setting is also the single most common reason people decide ReaTune sounds bad: in Chromatic it snaps to the nearest of all twelve notes, so a note sitting halfway between two pitches can get locked to the wrong one. Set the actual key first. The full walkthrough is in our guide to tuning vocals in REAPER with stock ReaTune.

Be honest about which problem you have

Gentle correction on a dry, mono lead that is already close is a job ReaTune does. Redrawing a melody note by note, or chasing a specific modern tuned sound, is where people start running out of patience with it. Those are different problems and only the second one is a shopping problem.

When a free tuner is worth installing

Three situations make a download worth the scan time:

  1. You want a result in thirty seconds. ReaTune rewards setup. Some of the free plugins below give you something usable with two controls.
  2. You want to edit notes visually. ReaTune's manual mode draws bars over a pitch graph. A piano-roll editor is a different way of working and some people are far faster in it.
  3. You want the obvious tuned effect as a sound. Hard correction as a creative choice is easier to dial in on a plugin built around it.

Three free tuners worth having

Auburn Sounds Graillon 3 Free Edition

The default recommendation, and the one already named in our wider roundup of free vocal plugins worth adding to REAPER. Currently version 3.2. Auburn Sounds describes Graillon as a voice changer and pitch correction tool, and the free edition carries the pitch shifter, formant shifting, pitch correction in both natural and hard-tune flavours, three selectable pitch engines, and a set of built-in extras including a compressor, gate, chorus, preamp and bitcrusher. It is offered as a VST, AAX, AU and LV2 plugin for Windows, macOS and Linux.

What you give up by not paying: pitch-tracking modulation, keyboard tuning for non-equal temperaments, and the vocal doubler. The Full Edition is listed at $29. The doubler is the one most home vocalists would actually use, and if you want that sound for free you can still build it by hand from a second take.

The reason it is first is speed. The correction section is small enough that you can hear a sensible result before you have decided what the key is, which is the opposite of ReaTune's experience.

MeldaProduction MAutoPitch

Melda describes MAutoPitch as a simple automatic tuning and pitch correction plugin for vocals and other monophonic instruments, with formant shifting and stereo expansion alongside the correction. It is free and arrives as part of the MFreeFXBundle, a set of 38 free effects.

Two practical caveats, both from Melda's own pages. First, the delivery: you are installing a 38 plugin bundle to get one tuner, which is fine if you wanted the rest and clutter if you did not. Second, the install path. Since version 17.00 Melda's plugins install through MPluginManager, which signs into a Melda account to check licenses and activate plugins, so this is a free plugin with an account step rather than a straight download. Melda also sells a $55 extension that unlocks interface resizing and preset management across the free plugins, which tells you where the free tier stops.

Pick it when you want correction you can set once and stop thinking about, or when you are already a Melda user and it is sitting on your system unnoticed.

Session Loops PitchNet

The interesting one, and the one the generic lists do not carry. PitchNet is a free and open-source pitch editor released under the GNU Affero General Public License v3. Rather than a correction curve on a live signal, it gives you a piano roll: neural pitch detection analyses the audio, the notes appear as editable blocks, and edits are resynthesised through a neural vocoder. It can export the edited audio as WAV or the detected notes as MIDI.

Prebuilt installers are offered for Windows and macOS at no cost. Windows builds are VST3 and AAX; Mac builds are VST3, AU and AAX as a universal binary. The published requirements are Windows 10 64-bit or later, or macOS 13 or later, 8GB of RAM with 16GB suggested, and roughly 500MB of disk, and Session Loops suggests a dedicated GPU.

Two honest labels on this one

The enthusiasm for PitchNet in the REAPER community includes a user reporting it beat Melodyne on difficult vocal correction. That is one person's subjective impression posted in a thread started by the developer, not a measured result, and it should be read that way. The GPU suggestion is also a real constraint: this is heavier than the other two, and on a modest laptop that already struggles with plugin count it is the wrong tool.

What about GSnap and the rest of the list

GSnap, from GVST, is the plugin that appears on every free autotune list ever written, and it is still free and still downloadable. It is also an older VST-format plugin, which matters more than it used to: if you are on a current Mac you are likely looking for VST3 or AU, and a VST2-era download may simply not appear in your plugin list. If a tuner you installed never shows up in REAPER's FX browser, that is usually a scan path or format problem rather than a broken plugin, and it is covered in how to install VST plugins in REAPER.

Beyond those, the free tuner category has a steady supply of new entrants, several of them limited versions of a paid plugin or free only through a bundle that needs an account. The criteria list above is more durable than any ranking: free with no time limit, runs in your DAW, adds something stock does not, and is clear about what is held back.

What a pitch corrector will not do

This is the part the ranked lists leave out, and it is the part that saves you an evening.

If the tuned vocal sounds wrong

Quick order to work through when correction is making things worse rather than better:

  1. The scale is wrong. A Chromatic or mismatched key lets the tuner lock notes that were fine. Set the real key before adjusting anything else.
  2. The attack is too short. Instant correction removes the natural pitch movement at the start of each note, which is most of what makes a voice sound human.
  3. You are tuning a processed signal. Put the tuner early in the chain, before reverb and delay.
  4. It is not the tuner. If the voice sounds synthetic rather than out of tune, correction may be one of several things stacking up. See why your vocal sounds robotic or over-processed in REAPER.
  5. You have stopped hearing it. Bypass the plugin and listen to the raw take again. Ears normalise to correction within a few passes.
Takeaway

REAPER's ReaTune already tunes vocals for free, so start there and only download when you can name what the download adds. Graillon 3 Free Edition is the fastest route to a usable result, MAutoPitch is the simplest automatic option if the Melda account step does not put you off, and PitchNet is a free open-source note editor for people who want to work visually and have the machine for it. No tuner fixes timing, tone, or a take that was never committed.
